Rusted streetlight poles fall under overload of cables
You might know that Navi Mumbai, the city of 21st century was developed by CIDCO nearly 35 years back and Vashi was the first node developed here. But do you also know that streetlight poles that keep the city alight at night were installed around that time only. Now, so many years down the line they have begun to rust and have become a major threat to unsuspecting road users on whom they may drop suddenly.
In Navi Mumbai there are around 55,000 street poles while in Vashi itself there are 3,107 street light poles illuminated by 3,638 lamps that provide safety at night.
An official from the electrical department of NMMC informs, "Almost all the streetlight poles were installed by CIDCO nearly 30 years back. They were of MS and GI type. The lifespan of these poles is 10 to 12 years and 30 to 35 years respectively. Unfortunately, most of the poles erected in Navi Mumbai are of MS type. To maintain these poles we have outsourced work to private contractors, who ensure that there is no power failure in any of the poles". Explaining the reason behind why instances of the poles falling down are being reported, he says, "Having run beyond their life spans, these poles have rusted and are already weakened. As an add-on problem, cable wires and advertisements are hung on them. Due to such overloading, the poles give way. Just last week a pole just fell near the community centre of Sector-3, Vashi. Fortunately, a tree behind it saved the pole from hitting the ground and causing any loss. It was found that the pole was overloaded with a bundle of cable wires and accessories weighing more than 10 kilograms".
The corporation has therefore released a list of contractors and concerned agencies for residents to contact in case of any problem related to streetlight poles.
