Avinash Sharma, resident of Akash Ganga Housing Society, Sector 2, Koper Khairane complains, "In our area rats are having a field day. They enter into homes and eat up not just food articles but also tear clothes, books, wires of washing machine, iron and whatever they can lay their teeth on."
When enquired, deputy municipal commissioner Babasaheb Rajale informs "For years we used to give contract to catch and kill rats and on the basis of the number of rats caught charges were paid to the contractors. But often if contractors did not find it a viable option, they used to exit the contract midway. So now we have come up with an alternative. As per the revised rat control programme the contract will be similar to the malaria control programme. All the required materials like aluminum phosphate, zinc phosphate, bromodiolon cake, glue traps etc will be bought by the corporation and six contractual workers will be deputed in each ward to combat the menace".
"We expect the expenditure on the new programme will be Rs 80 lakh per year," adds Rajale.
However, residents are still skeptical about how the corporation will tackle the rising problem of rats in each and every society.
