On January 19, DCP Zone-I Ashok Dhude had organized a meet with senior citizens in collaboration with Navi Mumbai Senior Citizens' Welfare Association (NMSCWA) under the direction of Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Gulabrao Pol. The meet was held at the Senior Citizens' Day Care Centre at Rajiv Gandhi Garden, Sector-29, Vashi. Hundreds of senior citizens not only marked their presence but also presented a brief charter of demands.
NMSCWA general secretary KR Singhal put forth issues and suggestions concerning senior citizens.
o Need for creating a separate Senior Citizens' Cell
o Flying squad for making surprise visits to joggers' parks in morning and evening
o Senior citizens' problems must be heard with patience by policemen
o Need to form a peace committee with senior citizens as members
o Speed breakers to control rash driving in city
o One-side parking to control traffic jams
o Special counters for seniors at each and every service providing agency like banks, mobile centres, railways, post office etc.
As it was an open platform for senior citizens, they talked about the problems faced by them. Jaishree Ved, resident of Sector-28, Vashi said, "Shivaji Garden and Sardar Vallabhai Patel Garden are always 'captured' by youngsters. They are mostly seen consuming drugs, liquor and spreading nuisance. This keeps us and other residents away from the parks".
Others complained about rash driving, chain snatching etc.
After listening to the complaints and suggestions DCP Dhude announced, "Action against each and every miscreant will be taken and a special cell will also be initiated. A special helpline will also be launched soon to give timely response to senior citizens.
Speaking on the occasion NMSCWA vice president Kesar Singh remarked, "Policemen must treat us as their parents and guardians and not just as senior citizens".
