Navi Mumbai is said to be the city of 21st century. It is surrounded by national highways linking Mumbai and Thane with Pune, Goa, Bangalore etc and Palm Beach road. In addition to these highways it has one of the biggest industrial belts, trans-Thane Creek as well as one of the biggest IT hub and JNPT Port. An international airport is also on the anvil here. All this means lakhs of vehicles coming in and passing through highways of Navi Mumbai.
Since residential colonies have been developed alongside roads in most of the nodes, lives of those trying to join the fast-moving vehicles on highways are at perennial risk. Considering the fact, MMRDA has chalked out a plan to develop 22 flyovers in the city.
An official of MMRDA informs, "On Palm Beach Road, the flyovers will be coming up at Amra Road, Killa Gaonthan, Belapur village, Karave junction, Seawood junction, Sector 4, 18, 25, 26, 40 and 50 junction Nerul, Chowk opposite Sanpada Railway Station, Ahmed Cold Storage, Sector 18 and Vegetable Market, Vashi. Three flyovers will come up near Dahisar village on old Pune highway, Gothivali and Airoli Naka, Vashi Plaza to Vashi junction, Belapur Sector 15 and 11. Two flyovers in Sector 19 Nerul, Uran Phata, near Pudhari Office, Khairane Naka, as well as on main junctions of Navi Mumbai ie Karave village, under bypass at Dutt Temple Sanpada and Turbhe railway station.
Sources reveal that a detailed report on the proposed development was submitted by Canada-based NGO to MMRDA in 2008. The report was later sent to state government and NMMC. It is learnt that the proposal is in a final stages and the authority is expecting a green signal at the earliest.
Once these flyovers come up, Navi Mumbai will be transformed into a city of flyovers.
