23 Vashi buildings found 'unsafe' in structural survey

NMMC has completed its annual exercise of conducting structural survey of buildings and announced that 53 of them are weak and dangerous. It has also served notices to owners/tenants and told them to vacate the buildings or get them repaired.
Twenty-three of the buildings identified as unsafe are situated in Vashi, seven in Belapur, six in Ghansoli, 13 in Digha, 3 in Turbhe and 1 in Koper Khairane. This time again JN-2 type buildings at Vashi have come under the scanner.
The list refers to eight buildings of JN-2 type and declared as dangerous. The building numbers are JN-2/3, 22, 23, 24, 26, 28, 30 and 38 in Sector 9/10 Vashi. Two buildings of JN-3 type in Sector 9 Vashi and 8 buildings of B-type in Sector 1 are also listed.
CIDCO constructed buildings in Sector 9 Nerul and one NL-4 building in Sector 1-A Nerul are also declared dangerous.
A list of around 50 plus unsafe buildings in the city is brought out each year. Deputy Municipal Commissioner Babashaheb Rajale informs, "Structural checking is done on a regular basis and cracks, leakages etc are identified. A report is prepared on the same and submitted to heads of the encroachment department. Later the department issues notices to the respective buildings".
"The corporation also releases advertisement inviting residents to submit their request if they think they have not been included in the identification survey. After the request is received by department, deputy engineer of the corporation organizes a survey and if the concerned building is found unsafe, the notice is issued," he adds.
"Once residents receive the notice they have to shift out from the structure and reconstruct the building. It is mandatory and should not be ignored. After all, it's for their own safety," says Rajale.
