A resident of New Daulat Society complains, "The open drain running alongside our buildings is one of the biggest threats to our health. No cleanliness drive is carried out over here so the place has turned stinky and a health hazard".
Apart from residential complexes, there is a school and the Maharashtra State SSC and HSC Board office in the vicinity. Hundreds of students flock here on a daily basis. Sector -17 Vashi hosts the biggest commercial market of Navi Mumbai and thousands of people visit here. To serve them a bus stop as well as parking provision has been made along this drain. "The major problem starts here. Most of the time people are found littering openly in front of our windows. We cannot even open our windows to take in fresh air," he says.
Babashaheb Rajale, Assistant Municipal Commissioner, NMMC informs, "We organize regular drives through our anti-litter squad to control such nuisance. Any one found guilty is fined". Mohan Dagaongar, city engineer informs, "Under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission we are going to take up the work of redeveloping all the drains as well as development of new drains wherever needed at the cost of around Rs 350 crore. The said drain will also be considered under the same". However, he did not give any time frame for the work to start.
Sources reveal that there has been no allocation of funds from the Centre to the Maharashtra government, due to which most of the projects related to JNNURM were kept on hold. It is expected that within a couple of week a Cabinet meet on the subject is scheduled and accordingly by the forthcoming financial year NMMC will receive approval for initiating work on storm water drains of the city.
However, miffed residents want corporation to take the matter seriously and at least develop a public toilet.
Responding to the demand Surendra Patil, additional Municipal Commissioner assures, "I will immediately send my team to inspect and accordingly initiate action".
