Now that shopping for Deepawali has begun in right earnest, police authorities are beefing up security in Vashi to foil any untoward incident.
Vashi is known as a popular shopping hub for people of Navi Mumbai. For the past 25 years and more residents of all nodes of Navi Mumbai come all the way to Vashi to do shopping for Deepawali. The main reason behind Vashi's success is that it caters to the needs of every class.
The most preferable markets for shopping are in Sector 9, 10 and 15/16. For high end products people prefer to shop at Sector 17.
In these markets one can buy anything from pins to clothes, sweets, decorative materials, gifts, jewels etc.
On the security measures taken by police, Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Gulabrao Pol informs, "This Deepawali has come with Assembly elections. For elections we had deployed a team of around 2,000 personnel force and other security agencies are working round- the-clock for the safety of each and every citizen of Navi Mumbai. We are conducting combing operations, flag march, nakabandi at each entrance supported by patrolling at proper intervals and any suspicious person is being questioned.
"During Deepawali, purse snatching and chain snatching are commonly reported at market places. All steps are being taken to deal with the menace," he says.
"Most of the shops and malls have installed close circuit cameras and alarms. Through them identifying anti-social elements becomes easier and they can be caught at the opportune time," he adds.
"Traffic jams are the second major problem faced by people during the festival. Adequate number of traffic police personnel have been deployed at major market places to avert chaos on roads," he concludes.
