Since the past six years, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has been constructing a multipurpose building at Sector 16, Vashi. NMMC developed this to provide services like gym, library, study centre, hall for events, etc. After a long wait, bowing to the mounting public pressure, the gymnasium part of it is all set to open for public. It may be mentioned that Cityplus has been supporting the voice of residents in the issue and in our issue dated March 19, 2010 Cityplus had published the article 'Testing patience, the NMMC way' to public their grievances.
RTI activist Ajay Walunj says, "On February 16, 2004, the work for constructing a multipurpose building consisting of a gymnasium, a library and a community centre was started. The work was supposed to be completed within eight months at the cost of Rs 41.36 lakh. Unfortunately, even after four years, we found that the work was still going on. This is what made the residents find about its status in 2008. To our shock, we had found that 20 per cent of the work was pending and it will be ready by March 15, 2009."
However, the twist in the tale came after the inauguration of the building in early 2010. "Till the end of the year 2010 neither any equipment was brought for the gym nor any books for library shelves. On the contrary, residents were compelled to take care of the building in the absence of any security men," says Walunj. However, the residents have a great sigh of relief as the gym is going to open up very soon. When we tried to contact the concerned authority, they were not available for comments.
